Bar #57 Waterbury Coach House (Deceased)

Welcome to the #1 ranked blog in Cleveland. Thank you readers for all your help. I'll try to keep up serving you and the bars of Lakewood the best I can. This blog actually begins after I picked up my award in Ohio City. We were tempted to head over to one of the hip Cleveland bars; but then decided that; when you can pick from any bar in Lakewood, why go anywhere else. That and I needed a blog for this week. There was only one choice I could make and steak was on special at bar #57, The Waterbury Coach House.
When entering the bar from the parking lot you are greeted with a foreboding dark steel door. I believe this is simply because it lowers your expectations briefly to the classy bar inside and probably to keep out the face stabbers after closing. The Waterbury Coach House gives you a mixture of vintage posters, classy surroundings, a diner feel with a splash of Italian. We were the only people in the bar below 45 years old. Jeopardy and the Indians game were on the TVs.

There are no beer taps. They have a standard selection of domestics, plus Great Lakes Brewing Company's Dortmunder. I went with the latter because you really can't go wrong with that direction. To describe what a standard beer should taste like is to describe Dortmunder. For those of you that prefer a dark beer, or a hoppy beer, or even a fruity beer that's all well and good, but that still requires an addition to the ideal beer. Even if it's not the beer you're in the mood for you won't complain about it. It's a good beer to compare the rest to, too.
They appear to have a larger selection of wine but no beer/wine list was provided.
You're going to spend more than 10 bucks a plate but you get multiple sides and it feels like a meal at a restaurant not simply getting bar food. The salad was fine. The buns were warm. The steak fries were fine. The ribeye was thin and a bit fatty. It was also large, cooked to perfection (real medium rare), and required no steak sauce to cause me to inhale it.
Our bartender was polite and took care of all of our needs. She was professional and had a good repertoire with the everyone that came in.
I had a conversation with an elderly man about the Pittsburgh, Pirates. He has always been an Indians fan, but added the Pirates onto his favorite list back in '54 when one of his favorite players were traded to them. It obviously takes more than a player moving to make you a fan of a new team *coughHeatcough*. It took the trade to get his notice but it was a similarity that has kept him paying attention over the years. Both Cleveland and Pittsburgh are smaller city markets but carry major teams. Where other teams rely on our largest cities or just claim geographic regions, these teams represent a different kind of a fan and relationship. These small cities that have put together great teams that stand (more or less) against the titan cities with vast financial and populations. It's more than a simple Napoleon complex, the teams become a part of their cities identities.

Here's the key, the cities aren't great because of these teams, these teams are great because of the cities. Cities like Cleveland and Pittsburgh don't see themselves as small cities that are lucky to have big teams. When we refer to our teams as we, we aren't saying we're on their team, we're saying they're on ours. We are great and our team must reflect that. We thrive because we believe we can. We make our city an extension of ourselves. We share our city's every win and every defeat as our own.
Cleveland/Lakewood aren't simply our cities, they're our neighborhood. Our professional sports teams are in turn our neighborhood's teams. I think this is what makes us friendlier, is that we carry that neighborliness with us and it doesn’t get wiped out in the feeling of the big anonymous city. Every bar in Lakewood are a reflection of our neighborhood city ideals. They are all unique, personal and, mostly, strive to make themselves worthwhile. We in turn want them to succeed; if our city is full of these great businesses it in turn reflects our own potential greatness. Like our teams, we share their wins with them.
The Waterbury Coach House has good service and a loyal clientele. Their food has a better than average diner quality to it. They have an average beer and wine list with no taps. The average age of their customers is around 55. I enjoyed my time at bar #57, The Waterbury Coach House, where they'll treat ya nice and make you a darn good steak!

Every Bar in Lakewood says vote NO on ISSUE 7 Sin Tax May 6 2014

@noclesintax

We are currently being bombarded by advertisements about one of the issues up for vote this coming week. It's endorsed by a small army of political leaders and local athletes. Its selling points are that it's not a tax increase but a renewal, and that if it's not passed we won't be able to keep up on our responsibilities. The question that should be raised is why is this effort being put into a tax renewal that theoretically is no big deal. Also, why is Issue 7 up during the primary elections now, which normally has a lower turnout, when the current tax doesn't run out till the middle of 2015? The answer is so that we don't question it or have time to even talk about it.

What is the purpose of this tax? It was created to build a downtown home for the Cavaliers. When the tax was renewed, the purpose was building a new home for the new Browns. This time, there are no new stadiums or arenas needed, but it seems they have fallen into such disrepair that we require a stadium's worth of money just to fix them. What the actual repairs are remains vague. Our money will, however, go into putting up a new electronic billboard at the Brown's stadium to allow the team, not the city, to raise more money through advertising.

Where should the money for these renovations come from if not from the general public? By raising the price of stadium event tickets around $3, the cost of repairing and adding quality marketing improvements would be taken care of. Instead, those behind Keep Cleveland Strong say that our small businesses should pick up the bill. All the bars in Lakewood must absorb these costs while they already have to survive under tight margins in a competitive environment.  They tell us that this is building our service economy while relying on its back to hold it up.  Is it really keeping our city strong to put its financial troubles on the backs of its small businesses instead of on its large multimillion dollar sports businesses.

They say that its our responsibility to take care of these teams. Teams that make millions in profits without the requirement of paying taxes back. They say that this is our responsibility as the landlords of these facilities. The Indians haven't paid rent since 2008 and the Browns only pay 1% of what the 49ers pay. They say this isn't a tax increase but the previous two sin taxes were for building stadiums. This tax is the same amount but for a different purpose. This isn't even the only money we are spending on our teams'.playing fields. We are also paying extra taxes on parking, event admissions (even small locals like the Winchester and Mahall's), and car rentals to pay for our stadium debts (we still owe $162 million). Since the original sin tax we, the tax payers, have spent $947 million to house “our” teams.

Instead of forcing an issue down our throats, shouldn't we be having discussions on how to best deal with our city's sport team debts. Shouldn't our teams be showing that they are willing to earn their place. How does taking the money out of small businesses' pockets to take care of millionaires, already being given big financial breaks, help keep our city strong? The stadium and arena's revenues should be priced appropriately to pay for its costs. It's time our sports teams pay their bills, so that we can too.

Best Blog in Cleveland Contest!

When I began this quest it was simply because I wanted to go to every bar in Lakewood. Turning it into a blog was simply to feed my need for a creative outlet and keep me from getting bored or lazy and quitting. Other than a few early bits of fame, including an article about me in the Cleveland Scene and being a celebrity judge for the Pillars Wing Crawl, I have been able to do this blog in relative anonymity. A handful of bar owners and bartenders knew who I was and occasionally I would be approached by someone that would randomly recognize me or more probably would recognize my shirt and want to know how I got one. When Scene Magazine's Best of issues would come by, I usually figured I could get nominated through a strategy of persistent online annoyance. I assumed my chance of actually winning was fairly slim, especially with the strong competition I had.

So, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that all of you thought I deserved to be the best blog and blogger in Cleveland. THANK YOU! I had a couple supporters that really supported the blog through the voting and nomination process. Thanks to Lakewood Citizen, or @lkwdcitizen as he's known on Twitter, we've been tweeting Lakewood news with each other on for a little while now and took to sending each support for the vote as well. You should follow him on Twitter for all your non-LKWD bar and disaster related news. (Don't worry he'll put up posts about bars and gang wars as well.) Momocho and El Carnicero included me in their own search for Cleveland royalty. I loved their bars before now. I even had my wedding reception at Momocho; yeah I bet you didn't have wild boar at yours. Bella Sin of Ohio Burlesque was a huge supporter of the blog for this years BOC. Her burlesque troupe is the longest running currently in the United States and is known internationally. I am also sponsoring a Nerdlesque (nerd burlesque) in Lakewood's Mahall's on May 10th that she is headlining.

The most important contributor to this royal victory is all of you. I have received nothing but positive support from all of my readers whether they live locally or moved away and want to hear about their home town. Plus, obviously, I couldn't win unless you all voted. Since, you've all been nice enough to allow me the chance to win this award I'm giving you the chance to win something too!

THE CONTEST!

Tell me what your favorite bar from the Every Bar in Lakewood list is and why. The winner will be picked at random. Lazy people who write something like, “Buck's Beer Bar because it's good” will not win. You can attempt to win by commenting on my Facebook page, tweeting @EverybarLKWD, comment on my victory photo on Instagram @everybarlkwd, emailing me at samlakewood@gmail.com or even commenting below. One entry per person, please. Sharing this blog may increase your chances of winning and/or increase the amount of prizes. Speaking of prizes, if you win you will get a $50 gift certificate to the any bar of your choosing from the Every Bar in Lakewood list. Runners up may win a Every Bar in Lakewood T-shirt or a beer token from Tarrymore Inn! The winners will be announced on May 9th! Answers may be featured in the actual Every Bar in Lakewood blogs.

Thank you for voting and of course thank you for reading. I hope you continue to enjoy my blog!

Cheers!  Because the best of Cleveland is Lakewood.

Bar #56 Spitfire Saloon (Deceased)

A longer time ago than I'm happy with I decided to write this blog. When it began, it wasn't simply about going to the great bars. Every Bar in Lakewood was about exploring all the opportunities and leaving my comfort zone. This week's bar was the epitome of this idea; though a favorite among some of more talkative Facebook commenters. The Spitfire Saloon is bar #56 and the #1 bar I wanted to visit when I began.
*Disclaimer: Spitfire Saloon isn't in Lakewood. Lakewood is on the other side of the street. After a good bit of debate on Facebook, it was decided that it would be included. This was because the readers wanted it to be and a new rule was created: if I can hit the bar with a snowball from Lakewood, then it's close enough to be on the list. Plus, what's more punk than being on the list of Ever Bar in Lakewood and not being part of Lakewood. It turns out, Lakewood is still part of the Spitfire Saloon anyway.
The Spitfire Saloon is a punk concert bar with a reputation, at least in the past of being high in levels of face stabbing and only a good place for punk fans to frequent. It later got a sign and rumors said that it was friendlier place. It's also now a favorite of the nerdy arts community. Yes, we have one of those.

After some confusion about how to schedule going to a kitchenless bar, we showed up full of Mexican food. The first thing you notice when entering the Spitfire is that it's very formidable against zombie attacks. Once you enter your eyes are drawn to a claw machine. It's your normal shirt machine except for one little difference. The claw has to drop 10 feet until it reaches the prizes. Normally, I'm not good at claw machines. Needing to look up to watch the claw and look down to see its destination reinforced the norm. Three dollars later I had no shirt.

I spent my next two bucks on a Fat Tire Beer by New Belgium. I found it disappointing, perhaps hot had temporarily changed my palate. It seemed to be clean but had a secondary taste that none of us could place. I came up with lame, if lame had a taste, this was it. It had a super dry finish as well. Fat Tire Beer was quite drinkable and had a great price for the evening, but I don't think it lived up to expectations.

My second beer was (picked by the bartender) Monk Blood by 21st Amendment. It had a dark reddish color, like it's name sake, and almost no head. The beer had a cherry mixed with other good stuff flavor. It didn't have much alcohol taste and was super drinkable. At 8.6% alcohol this may be the most dangerous beer I've ever drank. I'm not the biggest fan of cherryish beers but by the time you finish the first can, you want another 6 pack of em.

There are items to catch your eyes all over the bar. Between interesting stickers, TVs with the Indians game, a half dozen custom made arcade games built by the owner, two claw machines, an interesting selection of people and a dog. The bartender was friendly, talkative and helpful. He was able to accurately pick out a quality beer both with specifications and without.

There was a diverse selection of people in the bar. You had your old men, a higher percentage than normal amount of tattoos and dark rimmed glasses, and a woman that both got shot down by one of the guys watching baseball and brought in her own sushi. There was no face stabbing and everybody was having a good time. The bar was fairly busy on a Thursday evening.

The arcade games, 3 of which are built into the booth tables, were full of old school console games. I started on Solomon's Key. This is a puzzle game, where you can create and destroy blocks, shoot fireballs that you find, and then die in frustration. My Nintendo skills did not translate into the arcade controls raising my frustration levels and causing arm flailingness to occur. This may simply be a side effect of the Monks Blood. I then moved onto Super Mario Bros. I figured I'd get a ton of play out of a quarter. I figured wrong. I found myself incompetent at controlling my jumps and only made it to the 2nd board even with two extra lives. Saddened by my newly found abundance of fail I moved to a different booth with different games. I didn't write down the next game's name. It starts with a large ape lighting your tent and butt on fire. You then angrily attempt to climb a mountain to smite him while avoiding neon green monkeys and an endless assault of monkey testicles...
I used the bathroom in the basement. To get there involves going through a maze in the depths of hell. There were crazy red stripes, an anus symbol and somebody's organ on the floor. There was also an extra hallway that smelled of smoke.
The music at Spitfire Saloon is primarily punk. The shows are free. If you can't make it to see your favorite band, they also stream all their shows for free. The band is paid directly by the bar, which includes a tape of their set. If there's no band playing, the (Scene award winning) jukebox is free as well. The only restrictions are you have to be at least 21 years old and you can't throw up in the urinal.

They have a contraption that shoots beer bottles at a wall. I didn't see it but the awesomeness of its existence must be brought up. They were also, theoretically, the first bar on the planet with a half pipe in within.

“When we opened their was no bar that catered to people that thought, dressed and lived outside the norm. People would go to just whatever bar, even though the owners thought they where undesirables.” -Spitfire Punk

I love this bar. I feel biased writing about Spitfire Saloon at this point. It's got the basic makeup of the type of bar I'm looking for. It's excited about what it provides and to whom and builds community. It's a dive bar but has a fantastic selection of beer. If it doesn't have the beer you want, they'll have an alternative you'll like more. There's crazy arcade games all over the place. They have a scary basement bathroom, this is preferred over mediocre and disgusting bathrooms. They make their bands happy. This bar is not for everyone. But if you aren't happy with the other bars you've found, then you're probably looking for bar #56, Spitfire Saloon.

Bar #55 Sidetrack Cafe Prologue

Due to everyone's lives becoming too busy and an avoidance to do the blog on the weekends I have only been puttering towards the final goal of having a beer at every bar in Lakewood and writing about it. Today, I write about a yesterday. It's fall 2005. I have a new 2006 Prius (that why I remember the year) and I am going with some friends to a bar I've never been to.  My memory may not be as accurate as I hope after almost a decade.  Bar #55 will be Sidetrack Cafe, but this is just its prologue to the official visit.

Sidetrack Cafe is known as a biker bar. Not in the flashy, neon fashion of the franchised versions out there or the biker bars seen on the Blah Blah Channel. Sidetrack Cafe is a place where people would sit down hot, stinking and tired after riding the backroads of America. They don't need a dozen specialized beers with spices, fancy names, and fancier price tags; if it was cold and beer, it was probably what they were looking for. A proper biker bar offers only what is needed to get the job done: beer, whiskey, seats and something that produces music. A real biker bar makes every other bar feel like a gimmick.

Sidetrack Cafe was split into three sections. The first section was your standard dive bar. Almost all the seating was along the bar itself and primarily warmed by men that have been riding motorcycles for most of the last half century. Classic rock was coming out of the jukebox and wouldn't stop for the rest of the evening. The bar was run by a pretty woman that had no problem keeping control her bar with just a smile and the ability to see problem coming.

The second room had some tables and chairs and centered on a large screen TV that remembered who shot JR. It had that slight lack in color that is seen in the old giant TVs that have been used a couple years too many. It may be too large to give up on, or might simply be too large to bother moving. My brain tells me everything in the room was a shade of brown.

The third room had plywood walls. There was a pool table taking up the majority of the space. That is everything in the room. The plywood didn't insulate as much as hoped, but we spent the evening in the room hoping the slight bit of shivering would work in our favor or that we'd stop feeling the cold after the next beer. At least we didn't have to worry about our beer getting warm.

Sidetrack Cafe gave me everything I wanted, beer, somewhere to sit and something to do. With all the amazing bars in Lakewood, it's easy to forget what really matters. Going to almost every bar in Lakewood has helped instill in me that it's not always about all the things a bar may offer, but all the things that I want from a bar on a specific evening. One evening I may want amazing food, and beer that tastes like a work of art. Another evening I may way want a dart board, cold ignorable beer and patrons that feel like we've known each other half our lives, even if we've just met. Living in Lakewood means getting exactly what you want, just remember that there's a chance you could find it in any Every Bar in Lakewood.

Sidetrack Cafe, Bar #55, may be completely different than it was 8 years ago. I look forward to seeing it again soon.
